  1. ALWAYS plie.

  2. Fouette turns are always a really hard thing to get. I never got a step by step instruction on how to do it. My friends and I just started doing it in the hallway every week at break and soon enough, we got them. Of course, they weren't perfect but by the time our teacher started teaching them to us, we already had a grasp on how it all worked.

So onto Fouettes: *please keep in mind, majority of my training is in Vagonava*

Step 1) Prepare. A good simple preparation starts you in fifth position. Then, tondue to the side and after that shift your weight so that your back foot (left if you started with the right in front and vice versa) is now in front and your tondued leg is in back. Make sure to be in a good plie with your weight equally distributed between your legs. Also, your arms are an important part of it. Start your preparation (when your standing in fifth) with your arms en ba. Then, when you tondue side put them into second position and when you shift your weight change you arms so that you have one in front (right if you are doing right turns and vice versa). Make sure that when you do position your arms, they aren't in a wound up position (arms are off-centered to your body in the direction that you do NOT want to turn in). People often make this mistake thinking that it will give them more momentum when in reality, it doesn't.

Step 2) Start turning. So when doing fouettes, it is a good idea to turn. To start the actual turning part of it, push off of your back foot while turning your body in the desired direction. For some people, it is easier to do a single pirouette and then realease the leg and start fouette-ing. For others (including me) it is easiest to just push off your leg into the straight leg position you aquire in the front, often doing a tour turn first.

Step 3) Add the fancy elements to your turning. Fouette means to whip, and in fouettes that is exactly what you are doing. As you travel toward the front, use the plie to get momentum for your oncoming turn. Then, as you go back up into plie carry your leg to the side and when your facing 90 degrees from where you started "whip" your leg into passe and keep a tight passe to keep the turn going. Lather, Rinse, Repeat. And the most important part is to remember to spot, otherwise you'll get dizzy and fall over and trust me, that will get your teacher's attention but not in the way you hope to. Also watch your arms. Don't let them flail around or do funky things. Simply, do them as you would in a chaine turn.

That's it. Viola! Your doing fouette turns. As to getting your teacher's attention... don't work 100% as it sounds you are, work 150-200%. By the end of tondue, if you are working hard enough, you should be sweating like a goth in mid-july running a marathon. Just make sure to have a bottle of water by your side you don't get de-hydrated and repeat a not spotting stunt.

    Hope this helps!

  4. do a piquet then on your fautte turns you plie when your leg is to the side

    sorry for my bad spelling!

  5. Well fautte turns may seem difficult but they are really very simple.

1- prepare to fourth position and USE YOUR PLIE!!!!

2- use your arms and leg to ''whip" yourself around

3- remember to spot and always using your arms and plie

if you are having trouble,,, you can practice the movements at the barre.

For your teacher to notice you...

    - always stand near the front and be confident (but not overly so  ;)

    -be upbeat and friendly

    - try to volunteer to go first

    - ASK QUESTIONS! the teacher can't always pay attention to all of the students at the same time but if you ask a question, she will realize that you are trying and interested in learning, the attention will also be on you because you asked the question

    - don't get discouraged, especially is you are in a large class because she may notice you but because you are doing well, she takes the time to help the people who really need it

  6. In your Fouette:

Start in first position with arms in first as well.

move feet and arms to second position (Turn out position)

Slide right foot back to fourth move right arm straight out in front of you (THIS IS WHERE YOU PLIE!)

Continue to begin your turn just like a normal pirouette except extend the desired leg.

When you turn to face the back (when you lower your leg/or bring your leg back to posee, is when you plie during the turn)

I hope this helps you! And as far as your teacher noticing you, i know first hand that when someone is trying too hard to get my attention, it doesn't work as well as the ones who I notice on my own. They are the ones who are working hard, not talking to their friends, and paying attention to every word i'm saying.

Continue to dance and follow your heart! You will do fine!
