is it better to drill into the cement holding the bricks or should I drill directly into the bricks? Does drilling a few holes in the cement in any way weaken the structure of the wall or building?

  1. It is by far better to drill into the mortar, for one main reason:  if you ever want to remove whatever it was that required the holes, it is far less obtrusive to repair a hole in mortar than in the face of a brick.

It will not weaken anything to any noticable degree.

  2. I know what your saying but, have never in all my 47 years thought about it and have never had any trouble with either way, it was a choice of how to get the bolt in the wall and, where-ever it came out. It always worked for me.

  3. It will be easier to drill in the mortar..& usually results in stronger anchor. the brick may crack if drilled & anchored into.

    The wall shouldn't be weakened.

  4. You didn't say how large of a hole.

Rex is correct.  Drilling in mortar (grout) joints is usually sufficient for concrete / masonry anchors or Tapcon screws.   Also, a masonry drill bit works in the mortar joint easily, but you may need a diamond impregnated drill bit if you want to drill into the bricks.

  5. I certainly wouldnt drill into the cement.  I would drill into the brick.

  6. whenever possible , drill into the mortar joint...
