  1. just depends on the power on your car - 4cy 6 or 8.  Check out your rpms normally safe to shrft and 3 or 31/2

  2. Road speed isn't as importnat as engine rpm. Shift when engine rpm's get in upper third of rpm band, or when engine starts to loose power. Eventually you will learn by sound and feel when to do shift.

Use lower gears to haul things, or to accelerate. When at a steady highway cruising speed, shift into top gear for best fuel economy.

  3. Depends on alot of things. First of all, the model of your car. Second how powerful your engine is. Just pay attention to the sound of the engine. You have to sort of learn by yourself.

  4. Do not look at the speed meter or the tack.  You feel for this.  If the motor seems to be turning to fast then go up a gear.  If you feel like you are pressing down on the gas and not picking up much speed you go down a gear.  For different driving you shift different just like a auto tranny does.  Just drive a bit and you will get the feel.

  5. depends on many different things, load, engine size, number of cylinders(very small factor) , redline. i shift at roughly 2500 - 3000 rpm, but as i said roughly, because i shift by ear  or feel.

  6. you should shift when RPMs reach mid point to high levels ( listen to the sound of the engine: how fast its running)

  7. Listen to the motor. Turn the radio off. The engine will sound different at around 15 miles per hour which means it wants shifted to 2nd. Listen again around 25 miles per hour which means 3rd gear. 4th is approx 45 miles per hour. These are approx..and once you get the hang of the clutch and shifting, it will come natural as to when to shift.

When you start out in first--when the engine gets higher in pitch-----shift to 2nd---when you hear the engine get higher again at about 25, shift again----don't ride the clutch either. Press firmly on the clutch, shift and let off the clutch and press the gas. I have always had standards---and it's easier to pay attention to the way the motor sounds than taking your eyes off the road to see what MPH you are by the speedometer. Sit with the emergency brake on (clutch depressed) and car running and get familiar with the shifting pattern in this car. Makes it easier when you are on the road.
