  1. They're old spots where "cat's eyes" or reflectors are supposed to be.  If you live in an area where you get snow, there's a good chance that when the plows went through during the winter they ripped the reflector out.

  2. To tell you what side of the road you are on.......

  3. My guess is it is so you can physically hear if/when you are slightly going out of your lane, or weaving. If you're weaving, you'll hear an abrupt (and rather annoying) sound of your tires moving across these blocks you are describing reminding you to get into the middle of your lane. I think the purpose is just to try to keep people aware of the lane.

  4. They are for all the reasons listed above as well. They also tell you if you are driving the wrong way. Next time you drive at night look in one of your side mirrors and you can probably see the red reflecting.

  5. Usually those hold the reflectors so you can see the lanes at night or during a heavy rainstorm.

  6. Theblocks are for the white/yellow reflectors that help youstay in the lane at night.  If you are on a 4-lane highway, the side you can't see is red to indicate that you are going the wrong way.
