When eating a slice of pizza in a pizzeria, do you pay before or after you eat?

I'm fascinated by this phenomenon. I always pay when I place my order, yet I often see people getting up from their table to pay AFTER they've finished eating a slice or two. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that (maybe it's just me). What is the proper custom?

I always thought it was that you pay then you eat.. but i recently had the same experience as you. I went to this little resteraunt, and was handed the food, and was told "you eat, you eat. then pay" .. kind of a strange concept, but i guess some places they still trust ppl..

I always paid when bought...... That's how it is wherever I go for pizza.

it all depends on the pizzeria some will make u pay first others you pay after u eat .

in NYC we do both !

I personal like to pay after I eat because it for me to eat the pizza hot than leting it get cold after pay the guy for the food .

The ones that I've been to, the food isn't served until you pay first.  I've never had the option to pay afterwards?

well it depends if your dining in, but ive had situations where i was dining in and they asked me to pay frist.
