When ever I take my wife out to dinner, the waiter/waitress always gives the bill to her. Why is this?

Maybe she is reaching for her purse. Most put it on the table between the people unless they have a reason to know who is paying. I usually have a coupon or something so they probably think I will pay. They used to always assume the male would pay even if he was young enough to be the son or grandson.

Well, she probably asks for the check.  If that isn't the case, then most likely the waiter/waitress simply goes with the odds and assumes that the woman is the one that pays.  I know in most marriages the wife handles the money.  I know it has always been that way in my household.  Most men are just not comfortable having to deal with the budget.  Don't take it personally, just be sure to be the one that ask for the check from now on.

wow- are you serious? i would hate to be on a date and the bill be handed to me. i do offer to pay, but to be given the bill right away, it makes it uncomfortable. what do you do, does she pay.

I don't know why they do that but when my husband and I go out ,he will give them the money and if I am around they give me the change. Don't know why but they do .My  honey just shrugs it off and keeps on going. But if you have a problem with then when you see them coming  hold you hand out to let them know your're paying, also what I do is nod my head to him to give that respect.

Used to be, if a man and a woman went out to a restaurant together, the waiter/waitress would present the bill to the man, as it was automatically assumed that **he** was paying for the 2 of them.

Nowadays it seems like the usual practice is for the bill to be placed in the middle between the 2 people, so as not to make any sexist assumptions about who is paying for who.

When you go out with your wife, are they actually handing the bill directly to your wife or just placing it in the middle of the table where she can see it and pick it up first?

They probably think she will take control of the payment. Wifes usally take alot of control over things. She will control who will pay, and with what you may pay with. Also when the check/bill is given she looks eleigant like she is going to pay.

I know that the woman would leave me a better tip. Men have no appreciation whatsoever what a server actually does, and what a difficult job it can be. Women are much more compassionate, and therefore tend to tip better.

If it happens often, there must be something about the two of you that makes her look like she is in charge.  If she's is a business suit and you're in jeans and tee shirt (with apologies to Steve Jobs), she may appear to be your boss.

If it bothers you, you might do something like pull out your wallet or charge card and place it in front of you so the wait staff will figure it out....unless of course you want her to pay which wouldn't upset me a bit with my wife.

This is the funniest question ever and the reason that servers hand your wife the check is because....hold your breath...most servers believe that almost all women were at one time or another in their life a waitress and therefore will tip better.  This almost always works, I know I am putting myself through school with this.  Thank you women of America, we college students appreciate you helping us get through school.  Okay aside from that maybe you weren't the nicest person in the world and so they don't want to deal with you at all.

I was only kidding that I give the check to women, they usually just wind up taking it, thank God, no offense men.

1.  They are going overboard in being 'egalitarian'

2.  Your wife is older or more mature acting than you

3.  She dresses better and has an air of authority that the wait staff doesn't perceive in you.

When you are a server the person who controls the ordering and basically the server is deemed who is paying.  You want to identify the person in charge on the dinner and you apparently are not.  I am assuming your wife is pretty demanding and controlling?
