When ever a cactus sprout do it first sprout with two leaves?

i planted a prickly pear cactus in a pot and two weeks after i see a sprout with two leaves is this my prickly pear cactus?

  1. You are probably seeing the cotyledons.

    Angiosperms (flowering plants) can be (simplistically) divided into two main groups: monocotyledons (=one cotyledon) such as grasses, sedges, palms etc. and dicotyledons (=two cotyledons) such as most other familiar flowering plants (including cacti).

    The leaves you are seeing are probably cotyledons, but whether these are your cactus seedlings or some other seed germinating in the soil remains to be seen!

  4. Yes prickly pear (Optuntia sp.) always sprout leafs before growing a pad.

  5. Most cacti start the sprouting process as a small pod type bud essentially saguerro  cacti.
