Question:

When exactly does the LHC go live?

I had heard it was gonna be on November 2007 but now I've heard it's gonna be in 7 days from today.

is that true? does anyone know?

  1. The initial run-up is in October, from what I understand, but of the major sensors & firing mechanisms, they're probably testing all the pieces daily.  

    I know of one "test" where one of the electromagnets nearly jumped out of it's housing, so now they're probably in a "Test, Check, and Repair" mode...

  3. The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). Initial particle beam injections were successfully carried out on 8-11 August, 2008, the first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for 10 September 2008, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on 21 October 2008.

    ... in case you were wondering, NO. A BLACK HOLE WILL NOT EAT US BECAUSE OF THE LHC.
