When flying from Spain to Italy, do you have to go through customs when you land in Italy?

It depends on your nationality, if you are the European Union citizen, you don't have to go through the customs.  Anyway, i think you may have to declare your luggage.

You'll do customs in the fist city you land. The flight from Spain (Madrid most likely) to Italy is considered an internal flight and you won't get inspected. All the same the control is rigorous all the way around.

British, Irish and other EU citizens can enter Italy and stay as long as they like on production of a valid passport. Citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand need only a valid passport, too, but are limited to stays of three months. All other nationals should consult the relevant embassy about visa requirements.

Legally, you're required to register with the police within three days of entering Italy, though if you're staying at a hotel this will be done for you. Although the police in some towns have become more punctilious about this, most would still be amazed at any attempt to register yourself down at the local police station while on holiday. If you are american, you don't need a visa to fly to most of Europe. You will go through customs in your first destination only.

If you require a visa to go to Europe, and you want to travel to multiple european countries, you must ask for a multiple-entry Schengen visa. If you fly to spain first, you will go through customs in Spain  but not in Italy any more.

If you are a spainiard, you won't go through customs either because you are a citizen of a schengen country and Italy and Spain both belong to the agreement. Schengen countries comprise most of Europe's nations.  For a list of countries visit this link
