  1. the AIM only recommends that you enter the downwind on the '45' and doesn't say how to get there.

For safety's sake, if you overfly the airport under any circumstances, do it at least 500' over TPA.

Whether you fly over at 500 or 1000' is a question of technique.

Personally, when I fly myself I much prefer to NOT overfly, instead receiving wind data on ASOS or AWOS which is now very widely available (but wasn't when I first learned). I circle the airport at about a 3 mile radius and turn inbound on the appropriate 45.

  2. 500 ft above the pattern works. Just make sure that you're not IN the pattern while you're having a peek at the windsock.

  3. I disagree with Grumpy, If you are over flying the airport to vacate the airspace, then 500' above TPA, otherwise join the pattern at the altitude prescribed, take a look from there. much safer IMO

  4. 500 ft above the pattern is acceptable to fly over the field, but if you're at an airport that has turbine powered aircraft operating, remember that their typical TPA is 1,500 ft AGL.  Safest bet is 1,000 feet above TPA to avoid all traffic.
