  1. Threy were gloved in the ring so the ref could check for anything hidden or whatever, and part of the rules. Now this sort of thing is seen as taking away valuabe time from a sport which charges,by the minute almost, huge amounts of money for air time.

  2. They no longer need it....my friend has been an Inspector for the NYS Athletic Commission for about 25 years & I still see him on TV and he is in the dressing room & stands outside the ring  in a fighter's corner during the one minute rest period. The Inspectors watch the fighter's hands being taped in the dressing room too.  The next time you watch a fight on TV from Madison Square Garden, you will see these inspectors ( wearing blue blazers & white shirts ) standing outside the ring corner or in the dressing room or in the ring after the fight.

  3. I think the two reasons fighters aren't gloved in the ring anymore are:

ONE:  Wasted time.  With cable networks charging an arm and a leg for airtime these days, fighters need to get into the ring and be ready to fight.  Theatrical ring entrances, however, are encouraged, evident by the ring announcers screaming the fighters' names once as they come to the ring, and once again for the official in-ring announcement.

TWO:  To discourage glove-tampering.  With the entire world watching, in the middle of the ring, you'd think that would be a safe place to be gloved up.  Problem is, with so much commotion in the stadium/theater/ballroom with massive entourages and ringcard girls (yum) they'd rather take care of the gloves in a more controlled atmosphere like the dressing room. . . with officials present AS WELL AS members from the opponents' camp.

  4. This is just a guess but I would say to save time that way the fight can start faster once they enter the ring.

  5. It kills too much time.  Fighters are now gloved in the dressing room under supervision of the boxing commission which has jurisdiction over the fight.
