  1. Remove the cable from the outer casing. Put some lubricant on it and put it back in, smearing around the lubricant.

Lubricate the pivot point on your brakes - try not to get any on the brake pads though.

  2. For Vee/canti brakes, take the brake arms off the post , clean the posts thoroughly and buff them with some steel wool or 320-grit sandpaper. Then clean the brake arms where they go on the posts. Lube lightly and reinstall, making sure you use the middle spring hole for both sides.

For road brakes, the most likely problem is that the caliper is not centered. There is a tool for holding the caliper in place while you tighten the mounting nut.

  3. So what type of brake is it? If you're serious about advice, why so lazy as to infom us on your brake type?

  4. It depends on what type of brake caliper it is.  On Mountain bikes it will be a V-brake, on a racing bike it will be either a single pivot (on older bikes) or dual-pivot on more modern bikes.  If it is the single pivot type, they are not the easiest to adjust to set the blocks central.  Try this site as I'm sure you will find the answer.  http://www.parktool.com/repair/index.asp

  5. Try lubricating the pivot point on your brake.  I had the same problem and I never could get it to work right.  Lubricating the place where the brake arm moves should fix it, but if not, you could always take it to a bike shop.
