  1. ummm

isn't that WHY you connect to the internet?

  2. Install a firewall like Tiny Firewall, Zone Alarm, etc...   Then you can control which programs are allowed to access the internet.

  3. i think that's normal and what it's supposed to do..

  4. see what loads upon startup, many programs automatically check for updates if you just install them and never change the settings/preferences

  5. Much of the data going back and forth is basically your computer talking to the other computer letting it know it's there and vice versa.

But there may be programs on you computer that are checking for updates - Windows, Office, iTunes, anti-virus software, etc. And it could be your email program checking for new messages.

It's also possible you have a worm or trojan that is sending into out to the web. Or you have adware that is sending out information about your browsing habits and so forth.

If it really bothers you, make sure you keep your anti-virus software up to date and make sure you turn off auto update functions in all programs. Also make sure you run spyware/adware software periodically.
