  1. It makes it easier for the tellers and less likely that your check will accidentally get mis-credited to someone else's account by mistake.

Why not just take the 2 or 3 seconds it would take you to write your account number, instead of complaining about having to do it?

  2. most bank required you to put your account number on the bank when you sign the back of the check, when I was receiving my check in the mail and went to deposit i wouldn't write my account number but the teller would write it there anyway.

  3. Legally, you are not required to do so - the Uniform Commercial Code only requires that the check be endorsed (i.e. you have to sign your name on the back).  As others have said, it makes it easier for the bank to make sure that the check is deposited into the correct account.

  4. ~~I use to be a researcher for a bank. Those checks are mocrofilmed (at that time anyway) and that's the only way I could find a missing check. I know things have greatly changed nowadays, but I would never not put my name, account number, and For Deposit Only on the back of my checks. If you hate writing it out, just get a rubber self-inking stamp. They are only about $10.00 at a office supply store.~~

  5. My bank will write the account number on the back of the check if I do not.

Also, once you sign the back of a check, the check becomes negotiable by the possessor.  If you sign the check and loose it, someone else could cash it.  Because of this, I write on the back of the check under my signature "for deposit only" and below that I write my bank account number.  In this way, if I loose the check, no one else will be able to a cash it.
