When i do cardio how can i be sure I'm burning fat and not muscle?

  2. There is no cardio besides HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) that does not burn some muscle in the process.  

    If you plan on doing any other cardio you must make sure you are getting in lots of protein post-workout.  That goes for any workout, but especially for a cardio besides HIIT.

    To "be sure" you need to set up a BMI chart and check it once a month.

    Practically, you need to ensure a correct balance of dietary intake of carbs, fat and protein... according to your age, weight, bone mass etc.

    If you do too much cardio and your diet is "un-balanced" you could in fact begin to "lose" muscle mass.

    Talk with a PT and set up a BMI and work out schedule to meet your

    specific "goals".


  4. When you do cardio, your body burns quick-energy sugars in your muscles.  It's not technically muscle fiber, but it's the energy stores inside the muscles that powers your body for 20 minutes.

    After 20 minutes of continuous activity (biking, running, walking, swimming), your body completely exhausts itself of those quick-energy stores and starts burning fat cells in your body.

    So, you're SURE you're burning fat once you have done more then 20 minutes of continuous cardio.
