  1. The power supply for your laptop will be able to take both 120 and 220 (50/60 Hz) so no worries there BUT you will need an adapter which you an buy at the airport (it's a small little thingy that fits onto your plug).  Other things (like hair dryers) you should buy in France.  The reason is that they can't handle the automatic switch to 220 Volts so they will burn up if you plug them in.  For that reason it's cheaper just to get a cheap hairdryer in France at Monoprix rather than buying that ridiculously large expensive converter they have at Best Buy or wal-marts.  You can alway check your power supply for whatever it is you have to make sure it can do the automatic switch.  On the power supply it will say something like "input 120/220 Volts 50/60 Hz".  If it says that then you're ok!  if not then don't plug it into an outlet in France or it will burn up very quickly.

  2. Plugs are differently shaped in France than in the US.

  3. The cord that your laptop uses is probably dual-voltage, so you shouldn't need a voltage converter.

However, you will need an adaptor for the plug. If you can buy one for France alone, this might run you $5. But some places only sell the plug adaptor for the entire world, and that runs closer to $30.

Try RadioShack or some place like that.

And here's another tip: many French hotels charge extra for Wi-Fi. For example, I paid €10 for 10 anytime hours. Also, like the Wi-Fi at many hotels, it was a weak connection (fine for email, but not for uploading vacation photos to Facebook).

To Chanteur: Actually, with the strong €uro, it's cheaper to buy a dual-voltage hairdryer before you leave. They sell for under $20 at Wallgreen's.
