When i put the heater on in my car it smells a bit off for a bit!! any ideas?

If you haven't used it for a while then the smell will eventually go away, BUT :

Check for a dead bird.

Usually, when you havent used your a/c or your heater in a while it will smell a little weird.

I'm not for sure why. just lack of use, i reckon. lol

But its perfectly normal and will go away soon

every ford i have owned has a smell from the heater, even if it doesn't have air con, they where 5 to 10 years ago. but i also get a smell from all the cars i have had that have air con, when the air con is switched off i get a stale air smell !

Could just be condensation in the system, or you've just driven through a smelly area (agricultural type smells). If it's a persistent problem, use the perfume test strips from magazines to improve the situation.

Dust, bugs, and other accumulated junk that has gathered in the heater box. This is normal and after a few uses the smell should either go away or at least weaken.

This is simply from lack of use or a dirty filter. Start using it more and if it still smells like that take it to your local car store and have them put in a new filter. I hope that i helped you resolve your problem

Could be that your pollen filter is dirty,i had the same problem (musty smell) you will normally find the filter under the bonnet near to where the wiper motor is.cheap replacement,about £10.

Id be very careful going about this. There have been many cases of unscrupulous farmers disposing of their dead animals in peoples heaters.....do you live near any farmland?
