  1. well ive been playing for 2 years and over the last summer i started being able to serve overhand but then my ability just went away lik 3 weeks ago...so my coach said cupped-do the bow and arrow method of serving so when ur drawing ur bow back, keep ur hand in th shape of the ball. it helped me a ton! today i just got my "power" back....i seriously feel more powerful w/o ahving to do underhand!!!! hope that helps....if u do keep ur hand straight than try to hit it w/ ur palm and kinda give it a push

  2. It's best if you keep it straight and hit it really hard with your palm.

  3. Keep the hand flat and the wrist firm and allow only a short follow through for the floater serve.

Keep your hand cupped with the wrist loose and a huge follow through for a top spin.  This will also need a higher toss and a harder swing.  It will not travel as far as you think.  It will spin short of where you think it should be.

  4. some people might say one way for control and another way to serve tricky balls, but if you're just beginning practice both forms and see which one gives you better results!

  5. Definitely straight.  Don't cup the hand.  It's just like hitting a spike. You don't cup your hands.

  6. Either way is good depending on what you want to do.

"Cupped" palm would give you more control regarding where you want the ball to drop, and you can expect more top spin if you serve it normally.

"Straight" is for serving floaters, when you make a sudden stop immediately after hitting the ball. You need to have enough strength (and confidence) to serve floaters.

If you can do both without letting your opponent tell the difference before the ball crosses to the other side of the net, your serve will be a "weapon" of your team.

  7. straigth, if you are a beginner

  8. you need to keep a BIG and FLAT open hand while serving!

  9. straight. i'm not a good overhand server, but what i do know is to

not follow through too much, or the ball will spin around, and to keep a straight and steady hand.

  10. flatter either way...but you can flip your wrist with is close to the same thing as cupping your hand, but by flipping your wrist youll hit it harder.

  11. Definitely use a straight hand when you are starting out. You can read an article on how to serve a volleyball at the site listed below.

If you are beginner you may be interested a free ebook called "20 Must Have Volleyball Drills". It has 27 pages of volleyball drills with diagrams and detailed descriptions etc.

I think it may be free only for a short time so check it out quickly at www.volleyballdrillsnskills.com

    Good luck with the service

  12. It depends on what type of serve you are going for. I tend to keep my hand flat and stop mid swing to get the floating affect, or I start flat, then snap my wrist and swing through to get top spin. I would say go with flat, but it really depends on how you want the serve to go and what your strengths and weaknesses with serving are.

  13. straight definitly you have way more control
