Hi There,

I am planning to visit Cornwall during the last weekend of July 08. I am a little confused or where in Cornwall should I go ? Penzance or St. Ives. Request you to please tell me which place is better, keeping in mind the following:

(1) We are a couple, and a three-year old

(2) We do not drive (public transport, from the town to beaches/other attractions, is better is which area?)

(3) We are looking for sandy beaches and loads of natural beauty - not interested in museums

(4) Acco is cheaper in which area ?

(5) Vegetarian food is easily available in which area ?

Or, if I were to stay and Penzance and make a day-trip to St. Ives area (or the other way round) using public transport, is that do-able ?

Thank you.

  1. St Ives is much  more family friendly orientated resort the beaches are close to hand .. and  the day trip is definintely do able as it is only about 10 miles away.

  2. Hi there.

Penzance is bigger and less expensive, it has better links (especially rail) to the rest of Cornwall  - including to St Ives.

St Ives is prettier, more expensive and has better beaches.

So go for St Ives. Vegeterian is available, scenery is easily walkable and the coast buses go to some beautiful places (go see Kynance Cove, for instance). The extra Acco cost will be balanced by your saved time and effort.

    Enjoy, Steve.

  3. St Ives definitely, no competion ... it's beautiful, got lovely beaches, there's public transport, just drop dead gorgeous ... unfortunately everyone else thinks so as well

I love Penzance too but it's more of a county town than a seaside resort ... accommodation would be cheaper than St Ives and probably more selection of public transport (but just how many places are you planning to travel to in a short time?) ... vege food is available all over

if the prices in St Ives itself are too high for you (and it is very expensive there I know) look along the coast at Carbis Bay or Hayle, there's good local transport running all along that stretch of coast

I promise you, if you stayed in Penzance and took a day trip to St Ives you would regret having planned your holiday over there ... there's plenty of buses between the two places

other options you could explore if St Ives is too expensive is staying in Mousehole or Marazion, both just outside of Penzance ... beautiful spots, nice beaches, loads of natural beauty (the coastal path is gorgeous along that stretch of coast) and easy transport into Penzance
