My son got a "free" 7 year old (ancient) hand-me-down laptop that is on its last legs...

He can keep it if he really wants.

It sounds like you're using a virtual charter public school.  It's not homeschooling.  Every virtual school I know about (~30) do not let you keep the laptop (or desktops) they provide.  You don't get to keep the printer, either.

You really need to ask the school this question.  We can't truly answer it without knowing what school you use.

What are you talking about? Homeschoolers are taught by their parents so they can use whatever they have at home.

Homeschoolers only have laptops they purchase themselves, so yes they get to keep them.

If you mean online public school, where the school loans a laptop to a student, well that depends on the school district.  They buy and own the computer, so they can take it back if they want, but not all operate that way.

If you are attending a charter or private school that provides it, generally no.  Check with whoever is providing the laptop to see if you are purchasing the laptop (you would probably know this from the bill...).  Some schools might have a buy-out option at the end of the year at which time you would pay the present worth of the laptop.  But...no, no one is giving out laptops for free.
