I do not mean a drop goal field goal but when a player hacked the ball on (kicking it from the ground unplaced) and it was inadvertently converted .

  1. I'm not sure but i could be wrong but i thought that a field goal is not something that can happen during play. I thought that a field goal was off a penalty or the conversion points. Whereas a drop goal can happened during play.

  2. Yes I see what you mean.  If the ball is still alive then they have every right to score from it.  Don't they have to touch whilst its on the ground then kick it.  Not pick it up but just get a first touch to it then kick it.  But I would be interested to find out.

  3. Definition of a Drop kick: The ball is dropped from the hand or hands to the ground and kicked as it rises from its first bounce.

    Law 9 Method of Scoring

Try. When an attacking player is first to ground the ball in the opponents’ in-goal, a try is scored.

Penalty Try. If a player would probably have scored a try but for foul play by an opponent, a penalty try is awarded between the goal posts.

Conversion Goal. When a player scores a try it gives the player’s team the right to attempt to score a goal by taking a kick at goal; this also applies to a penalty try. This kick is a conversion kick: a  conversion kick can be a place kick or a drop kick.

Penalty Goal. A player scores a penalty goal by kicking a goal from a penalty kick.

Dropped Goal. A player scores a dropped goal by kicking a goal from a drop kick in general play. The team awarded a free kick cannot score a dropped goal until the ball next becomes dead, or until an opponent has played or touched it, or has tackled the ball carrier. This restriction applies also to a scrum taken instead of a free kick.

In answer to your question NO, you can only score from the methods described above. A fly hack that goes over the posts, unless it goes dead is still in play, & the game is restarted in the appropriate manner i.e. ball touched down by Attacker - try / Defender - drop out 22.

  4. are you sure?

Are you sure they once awarded a score for this ?

And are you sure they don't now?

  5. Wow, what a question. I'm curious as to what made you ask this.

Anyway, A field goal in rugby union used to be the most common way to score points, but it wasn't done by hacking the ball over the posts from open play. You were given the opportunity to attempt a field goal when a player caught a ball that had been kicked down field by the opposition. He was then allowed to place the ball behind the point where the catch was made and a teammate would then attempt to kick the ball over the posts. The reason he would not attempt himself is because as soon as the ball was placed, the opposition where then allowed to run at the ball to block the attempt.

The field goals were awarded 4 points in the early days of rugby, but were then changed to 3 before they were removed completely in 1977.

I hope this helps, there isn't really any record of them awarding points for balls kicked over during open play. Hope this helps.
