  1. They work if you have and upconverting DVD player, blu-ray player or an HD DVD player connected to your 1080p HDTV via HDMI cable.

  2. What do you mean "start working"?

TV will not be 1080p anytime soon --- decades? The bandwidth is too high and technology has to go some to make it feasible.

Most movies are shot on film and can be converted to at least 2 -3 times 1080p resolution. Blu-ray and HD DVD are recorded in 1080p. Video games are increasingly available for 1080p. 1080p display units (HDTV or projetcors) are readily available in 1080p and connectors (e.g. HDMI) are readily available that support 1080p.

Since hardware and program material is increasingly available what (other than HDTV)needs to start working"?

  3. The only thing that can provide 1080p right now for your viewing pleasure is HDDVD and Blue Ray. Sure some DVD players can "upconvert" to 1080p but the source material is still less. Keep in mind 1080p and 1080i are still the same resolution. It is is only the way the signals are handled that determines if the image will be 1080p or not.

There is not much of a difference. Especially if your TV is far from your viewing position. Do not let enyone fool you.
