  1. The term of the child's 3rd birthday they are entitled to 2.5hours per day of funding Mon-Fri for a certain amount of weeks a year.

So if you're child is 3 end of May they would be funded in September. (The summer term ends July and new term of the child's 3rd bday will then be Septembr).

www.direct.gov.uk has info on childcare for parents.

  2. A child is able to claim a free school place in the UK at the beginning of the term in which s/he reaches her/his 5th birthday altho' nowadays most children actually start in their infant schools at the beginning of the school year  during which s/he will reach her/his 5th birthday. So most reception class children actually start school aged four.  You cannot be forced to send your child to school before the start of the term in which s/he reaches five. (On a legal point - you don't have to send your child to school at all as long as s/he is educated to government recognised standards.)

  3. The term after there 3rd birthday they are entitled to 12 half hours free at a pre school or play school
