When is a good time to buy Air Tickets?

To the US. When is a good time? say a year before or like 6months so that you get the best price.

some airlines only let you buy tickets 6 months in advance so buy them as soon as they will let you. i travel around the US a lot and i always buy mine 3-4 months in advance.

21 to 90 days advance.  More than 90, and you might miss a good sale.  Less than 21, and you're inside the cutoff for the cheapest advance-purchase fares.  Airlines occasionally float good sales more than 90 days advance.  Find out the historic lows on a route, see what's being offered currently for the upcoming 11 months, and sign up for sale alerts here: http://www.farecompare.com -- just enter your cities and click "find cheap airfare."  On the right of that site, you can then see the most recent sales on the route, and sign up for alerts.

its hard to tell if you want to book them so far out.

if your planning to fly at a holiday time like Easter or Christmas or during school holidays, then by all means the earlier, the better.

Look for specials that the airlines put out. Its good to subscribe to their e-mails to get cheap deals. Sometimes they will have 'subscriber only' offers that are really good!

Otherwise if you are planning to go away in say a few weeks, then check the price of the flight that you may think you want daily. Sometimes the price will go up, other times down...when you think its a good price, go for it...if you see prices getting low but then go up over the next couple of days, then maybe its a good time to buy then too before they got too expensive!

its mainly just about having common sense and been paitent. Airline ticket prices are unpridictable...my dad tried to book a flight once, he was about to click book then the computer said he had to start over; the ticket had gone up by $20!!!
