When is a mamey fruit ready for eating?

I purchased a mamey and now it's hard and dark brown. When is this ready for eating? Is it supposed to be soft and different in color?

To tell when a mamey fruit is ripe, peel off a fleck of the skin to see if it is pink underneath. The flesh should give slightly, as with a ripe kiwifruit.
