  1. They are tried out and voted on by a board of countries. If they get voted as an olympics sport they get a test phase to see how the public reacts to them. All events get voted on every time they have the games for the next time. Look at softball hopefully we will see it return in 2016.

  2. Water polo players actually have more muscle and work harder then an olympic swimmer. BMX that is not a sport.

  3. swimming and volleyball aren't sports they are eye candy.

  4. theres really no solid line as to what is allowed in the olympics and what isnt... its generally just up to the IOC

  5. sport -

    1.

    a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

    b. A particular form of this activity.

    2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

    3. An active pastime; recreation.

Very vague definitions.  There have been endless debates about what is and what isn't a sport, but no one is right and no one is wrong.  It's absolutely all dependent upon interpretation.

Water polo generally requires much more strength and endurance than swimming.  The players cannot touch the bottom or sides of the pool for the entire 8+ minutes of every period, and they have to swim back and forth depending on the flow of the game.  It's not a set motion for them, they have to move on the fly.

Badminton requires a lot of endurance, more so probably than tennis and basketball.  Each point is very long since the shuttlecock is light, so it is difficult to put a point away.  Then throughout each point, a player must jump smash 2-4 times, in addition to moving back to cover clears and lobs, then forward to cover drop shots, and side to side to cover movement there as well.

Table tennis requires the ability to react fast, not only to time everything so quickly, but also to find the correct angle to return a ball back, and get the correct spin on it as well.  This one could be a little more disputable, but it is still one of the most popular sports in the world, and if baseball and cricket are considered sports, table tennis might as well be as well.
