Question:

When is it appropriate to use the word "spelt."?

Or misspelt? I know it's proper to use the word spelled, but I swear there is an ok time for spelt.

  3. Spelt' is the traditional British form but it's not recognised in most other parts of the world. (i.e. it's not part of 'international english').

    'Spelled' is creeping in from the US and seems to be the accepted form for many British newspapers.

    According to the OED, irrespective of the form chosen, the correct way of pronouncing the word is 'spelt'. This is unusual because it's normally the US form of a word which matches spelling with pronunciation; here it's the British form which does so.

  4. Without referring to any dictionary I have always understood 'spelt' to be the past tense collectively.

    He spelled it that way

    They spelt it that way

    I'm probably wrong and loath to confirm it so. ;]

    OK I give up.  Having Websters and WiKi's incomplete definitions thrown at me needs a response.
