When is it mandatory to enter the US by car with a american passport?

i am an American citizen but i wanted to travel by car but i wanted to know when exactly do you have to enter with a passport? I heard in January 2008 but now i hear something about June 2008 so does any one know or can give me a website i can go to to get information please...Thank you in advance!!

  1. They JUST changed the law, Jan 1 of this year, so yes you do always have to have one now.

  3. It is now the law. If entering the U.S. you must present a passport. Even if you go to the Bahammas,Mexico,or Canada.

  6. This June is it.  Check with the US Post Office and they can tell you as they handle Passports. Traveling out of country you really ought to get one before you go. I think they cost about $90 and are good for 10years.

Right now, all you need is a driver's license and one other photo ID or birth certificate (not a copy) to go into Mexico and come back out.  As of July 1st you will need a passport per Homeland Security directive.  It was originally slated to have a passport by January 1, 2008, but because of so many passport applications, Homeland Security extended the deadline to July 1, 2008.  Enjoy your trip to Mexico.

  8. the website below is the US state departments stand as of now on this issue for western hemisphere countries. travel from all other countries requires a passport.

  9. June of 2009.  You need some type government issued ID and a birth certificate from Jan 2008 to June 2009.
