When is it okay for a toddler to eat raisins?

My son is a year old. His molars are on their way in, but not broken through completely. He's comfortable eating most other "adult" food. Do I need to wait until he can actually chew them or can raisins be "gummed" too?

  1. He's not likely to choke on them, but dentists HATE raisins because they are sticky.  I've been told they are worse than candy in terms of something sugary sticking to their teeth.  You're probably better off giving regular grapes cut into quarters or other fresh fruit.

  2. My kids ate them. DD #2 loved RAY RAYs - she swallowed them whole, as she did ripe blueberries. They come out similar to the way they go in ... tee hee.

  3. Raisins are better than candy any day, but they are still high in sugar. That's the real problem with them.

They are great if the child is constipated.

They can have them, but in moderation.

You want to hold back a little due to the sugar content and for the fact that too many can cause diahrrea.

My 1 yr old can eat raisins. We give her raisin bran when she seems constipated. She has only her front 8  teeth and she can manage them just fine. She gums them, no problem. Try cutting them in half for the first few times, to see how your child manages them.

OR, if you are not completely comfortable with his abilitly to manage them, then don't. Go with your instinct. Your baby will definitely be ok without raisins until you are comfortable giving them to him

  4. It may be okay now, if he can eat other foods like them. I was giving them to my daughter before she turned 2 and she didnt have a problem eating them.

  5. yeah. why are raisins listed as a choking hazzard? they're smaller than cheerios? what gives?
