When is it to late to start learning to swim for real and be able to compete(i'm 17)?

i've always known how to swim since i can remember and me and my lil brother race all the time, so i was just wondering,

i'm about to be 18 in October and i'm about to go to college and i was thinking about try to join the team am i to old to start.
