  1. when hte ride is longer than  6 hours

  2. As with all things, you get what you pay for.

Travel by rail is time consuming and you are basically held captive with many others.  Spring for the extras.  It will make any trip of longer duration more enjoyable.

  3. The last time I rode the train we got a sleeper room (not much of a room but there were 2 beds).  But when you got a sleeper you were automatically first class.  Which included free meals.

Like someone else said you are separated from the riffraff too.

I thought it was worth the extra cost.

  4. when its time to sleep you get a bed. otherwise you sleep in your seat.

  5. If you are travelling in Europe it pretty much guarantees you will have a seat. If you are in India, It guarantees you will have a clean car to rid in. If you are in the states it keeps you seperate from all of the rifraf. Also in the states and in europe you can get a sleeping cabin.

  6. On Amtrak, it won't separate you from riffraff... they don't ride Amtrak, they ride Greyhound.  First class generally means better accomodations and better service, however it also separates you from the interesting people.   On Amtrak, everyone shares the same lounge and diner, except first class passengers get meals "free".
