I would like to know what months, of the year, are the mosquitoes present in New Jersey (around Bergen County), in order to give my pets a heartgard pill during those months.

Thanks

  1. In NJ the temps go all over during the winter months. It is recommended here that you give heartworm medication year round. It is much cheaper to continue the medication then to have to treat a dog for heartworm; depending on an animals weight anywhere from $300-600. If you do choose to have them go off of the meds for a few months it is highly recommended that you have you pets tested once a year. It takes 6 months for heartworm to show up in a blood test after the mosquito infects the animal.

  2. From May till the first frost in October/November.

  3. From the beginning of January, up until the end of December.
