Question:

When is my cat ready to be neutered?

My female cat had a litter of 4 kittens who are 8 weeks old today. One of them already went to its new home at the weekend, another two are going this week - and we are keeping the last one.

When can I take her to be neutered? How am I going to wean (my) new kitten completely off his mother?

  1. You technically can do a spay as soon as the kittens are born, but it's true that a lot of vets prefer to wait until the milk has dried up before doing a spay.

However, there are a lot of vets who will do flank-spays (they approach from the side of the cat, not on the midline), so that it doesn't matter whether there's milk there or not.

So really it depends on what your favourite vet prefers to do and how much milk she has left.

  2. You actually could have had her SPAYED (neutering is for boy animals) right after she had her litter. Her v****a is useless to the kittens now :)

Get it done right away, and keep her inside until you can bring her in!

    RE to your edit:

My vet does my rescue mom cats when they come in pregnant. I guess each vet has their own opinions, and it never seems to cause any harm.

  3. my vet says they have to be 8 wks. or older and 2lbs. or more.

so she can be spayed now

  4. Yep, she can be fixed now, but the vet may want to wait until her milk is dried up.
