What "extension" are you asking about?  If you filed an application for extension of time to file your Federal income tax return, it's due by October 15th.  Note that that's an extension of time for filing only; any tax was due on April 15th and anything paid after April 15th will attract late payment penalties and interest.

If you haven't filed an extension application, it's too late to do so now; that was due by April 15th.  If this is the case, file ASAP to stop the clock on the late filing penalties.  Those are a whopping 5% per month.
