When is one's heart beating "too fast?"?

i am 20 years old and weigh 120lbs. i am a relatively active individual. my resting heart rate is usually between 60 and 70 bpm. when i exercise, it gets as high as 200, even though i do not feel pain or weakness. on occasion, i experience a fast pulse when i am not exercising, but it rarely exceeds 140bpm. i am someone who also experiences cardiac arrhythmias on a frequent basis, and tend to have a low blood pressure. i am wondering how concerned i should be under these circumstances.

  1. You should be a little concerned but not overly concerned.. There is obviously a issue with your heart that should not be ignored... Irregular heart beats are common but is some cases medication is used to control it...


  2. I exercise and am active and use to be a runner with the same symptoms you just described. I contacted a heart specialist and had a stress test - it is an all day sometimes 2 -days test but it put me at rest and all was normal.  Some was attributed to caffeine which I cut down on except I do have a few shots of espresso a week early in the day so if I exercise at night I might get a racing heart beat. I never drink sodas, fruit drinks and of course smoking is Yuck!

  5. My bpm can get as high as 290 sometimes, just from stretching.

  6. Those readings are are wide spread. Consider seeing your doctor or a cardiologist.

  7. it can be caused by dehydration.  try drinking more water and see if it helps at all.

    if it keeps happening, you might want to see a dr, they can do an ekg and just make sure its beating correctly.

  9. Not too concerned. Ask your doctor next visit. Check out the calculator below. For exercise, 185 is near optimal; you're not too far beyond that.

If you are resting, a heart rate over 100 beats per minute is considered tachycardic (or fast heart rate).  If it's up to 200 when exercising, I'd say that really isn't that bad.  If your HR is 60-70 resting, that's normal.  Is your cardiac arrhythmia diagnosed by a doctor?  If not, you should have it checked out.  And how low is your blood pressure?  If the top numbers is in the 90s or 100s, for someone who is 20 years old and active, that's not really abnormal at all.
