When is the best time (investment wise) to buy an engagement ring?

This is admittingly an odd question, especially considering this is an investment forum. I was curious when is the best time to buy an engagement ring, investment wise. The salesmen at the jewelry store tell me to buy now because diamonds and gold is always appreciating.

Obviously no one has a crystal ball that can see into the future, but would it be worth investing a diamond ring now by putting it on lay away or interest free financing and be able to get more for my money? Or are the prices of diamonds and gold constant enough that I'd be better off saving the money in a bank account or maybe a short term CD?

  1. The best time to buy an engagement ring is when you know she'll say "YES".  Beyond that, in my opinion it is always better to save in a bank and earn whatever interest (no matter how small) you can; the jewelry store is not going to pay you interest.  You might also be trapped in a contract to finish the purchase regardless in your change of plans.

    Good luck.

  2. Well this is not the time to invest in gold and diamond because the rates will come down in the near future.

  3. The best time to invest in one is when she says yes.  I suggest you look into short term CD's.

  4. Go the savings account or short-term CD route.  It is not a great time to be purchasing any commodities including gold or diamonds.  I also would not let your significant other know that this is an "investment" or you will feel the pain.  ;)
