When is the best time of year to visit Ireland?

Question

Specifically -- when is the weather the nicest, which events should I try and plan my vacation around, etc.? Any addition thoughts would help! THANKS!

I am from Ireland now living in USA married to an American I met in Saudi and we go back to Ireland  just about every year. I suggest you go August/September and even October. The fares are cheaper in October but the weather is usually guaranteed to be warmish in August Sept.   The food is good. I miss it.  Scones, all the fresh bread.  Make sure you visit the home bakeries which are in every town and several of them.  Visit the old castles.  Newgrange is over 5000 years old near Drogheda.  Giants Causeway to me is very interesting.  I have been there 3 times and am amazed at it. People are just friendly.  Hope you have a good trip.

It's hard to tell.

Summer 2005 was very hot

Summer 2006 was very hot at times but very wet at others!

Summer 2007 was very very wet (something like 40 days of nonstop rain!!)

So that rules out planning your trip for the weather! Now I'd arrange it so you come when the kids are at school.

School holidays are

Summer= June July and August

Mid term= 1 week at the start of November

Christmas= 2 weeks from around 22nd Dec to Jan 7th

Feb mid term= 1 week from around the 10th Feb

Easter 1week before Easter Sunday and 1 week after.

Summer (same as above)

Any time other than those would be great!

Saint Patrick's Day is good. Carnivals and festivals. Average temperature would be around 13-17 degrees.

Most people choosing May for holidays get good sunny weather, but of course it is not guaranteed.  For events, the summer months are busiest, with many festivals organised in towns and villages all over Ireland, mostly during July and August.

If you already know where you will be based, you could do a web search for that place, and see what might be planned.  For example, I did a yahoo search for Westport events 2007, for an idea of all that happened there last year, and

produced a page with links to click showing all the events in different months.  You could do a similar search for the area you will be in.

The weather is very unpredictable, so really you should just pick a time and hope for the best. I advise travelling in May/June or September.

And don't plan too much. And be aware that while distances do not seem great, the roads in Ireland are for the most part NOT made for fast travelling. Pick an area to base yourself in and explore from there. I would recommend a small town in a rural area, and make friends with some locals.

Early september late august is normally ALWAYS sunny!!

any other times and you risk rain all the time...so august and early september are good times
