When is the best time to apply for financial aid in my case?

I have to attend community college for two years b/c I have a technical degree.

I have two colleges in mind currently.

One of the colleges application due date is July 1st for the Fall 2009 session and April 1st for the Summer 2009 session.

The other college due date is August 10th for Fall 2009.

I heard my counselor saying to turn the FAFSA in January...but I am confused whether I can or should do that so early when my application dates are due so late.

Does the time you apply for financial aid matter? Should I do it before or after I apply to the colleges?

You should apply as soon as possible after Jan 1st and AFTER you and your folks have done your takes.  Think Valentines day!!

It doens't matter when you apply to the colleges, admission and fin aid are two seperate processes.
