Other than in the middle of winter when the old one goes out and makes a big mess in the floor.

  1. the best time to replace a hot water heater is when your unit has reached 10 years old. 10 years is the life expectancy  for hot water heaters. now is a good time to buy,  the higher gas prices go the higher the cost of replacement will go.

  2. When you can afford it.

  3. a waterheaters life span really depends on the condition of the water.  most water heaters last between 10 and 15yrs.  if you happen to have a well which produces more sediment the life span will be a little shorter.  also if you maintain regularly, such as flushing it every year will also have an impact on the lifespan. you should be able to go to the manufacture 's website and type in the model number and serial number and see when it was made.  so you can determine how old it is.  then based off of that if it pretty old i would reccommend changing it rather than have a mess on your hands.

  4. have you noticed gas prices lately?

    Go electric, dude.

most power co. will give you a free electric water heater if you switch to electric.

    call and ask

  5. If the one you have is long out of warranty the best time is:

    Before you really need it.

Look for occasional sales at major home improvement stores

  6. Check out "on demand" type systems, they save water(by not having to wait for the hot water to arrive at the faucet), and they don't keep a big tank simmering for long periods between use's

And you don't have to worry about large puddles.

They may cost more in the beginning, but pay for themselves in the long run.

  7. If you have a feeling, due to age of unit or performance issue, that your heater is going to fail, you can start watching for sales, comparison shop, etc.  Otherwise, it really makes no sense to have an extra laying around "just in case".  Unfortunately, they are replaced as needed.  It's like stockpiling an extra starter for your car........
