If you can plan far ahead, tickets are usually cheaper if you can make your reservations 4-6 weeks in advance.  They get more expensive as you get nearer to flight time.  (also, seat selection is better if you reserve early... less chance of getting stuck in the center of 3 seats between two fat guys)

Avoid school holidays and try leaving and returning on a day such as Thursday. If you don't mind unsociable hours for your flights that will also reduce cost.

ASAP   Fuel cost are rising for the airlines just like they are for the rest of us at the pump. Fuel is now  the number one cost for the airlines. Purchase tickets at least one month in advance. Other factors have a minimal effect.
