When is the best time to cut back roses? I am not sure what kind they are they are just a big bush.

I need to cut them back and replant them in a different spot. What do I need to do and when?

  1. Best time to cut them back is in winter (January), and replant in the spring. If you cut them back now, they'll just sprout again.


  2. It really depends on where you live.  I know that in California a good time frame to cut them back is late December into January.  Colder climates might want to move up that date to as early as November.

    Once you cut them back it is fine to dig them up and move them.

  4. Depending on where you live, usually the spring or fall are the best times to replant roses.  As far as trimming them, you need to cut them to just before the leaf with the 5 leaves, leaving that leaf on the plant.  This is where roses will produce next year!
