  1. Only your PSAT results from your junior year are considered for National Merit. I would definitely recommend taking the PSAT in 10th grade so you can see how well you do. The score required to qualify for National Merit depends on your state. Some states have really high numbers to qualify like Connecticut and some have really low ones like Mississippi. But basically try for a 215 or above. For your SAT you take it in 11th grade or the summer after. Don't take it too many times because the school you apply to will see all of your scores. And for National Merit, they only take the SAT score from your highest one sitting so you can't mix and match your scores from different sittings. Also they won't inform you of whether your a National Merit Semi-finalist until September of your senior year. And then they don't announce Finalists until February or March of you senior year. And then you go through an application process that I though was pretty simple (just one basic 500 word essay).

  2. I'm not sure but for me it was official for the Junior year. I don't know if you're sophomore year results are great than you could use those. 10th grade resuilts. I think it might be one year before you graduate. You should try and see how you do on the test in the 10th grade make you're improvements with review books and practice and then take it in the 11th grade. I think then after that you have to "prove" you're PSAT score with a really good SAT score and you're counselor should help you take care of the application.
