When is the best time to go?

Im 20 weeks pregnant (half way there! yay!) Its also my first pregnancy.

Any how, just thinking ahead, when is the right time to go to the hospital? If your waters break does it "gush"out of you or kinda "leak"?

How soon after that do you wait to go to the hospital?

Or do you base it on how close together the contractions are? I just want to know when is the right time?

I literally live a 3 minute drive away from the hospital by the way!

  1. when your water breaks and ur having contractions from 10 to ten it's a sign u are ready to have a baby:) congrats for ur baby best wishes

  2. in the uk they like you to wait until your contractions are lasting longer then 60 seconds and are between 3-5 mins apart. your waters can gush or leak if your waters gush you need to go to the hospital weather contractions have started of not if your waters are leaking then you would probably be best ringing the labour ward they will tell you weather to come in or not. in all cases apart from emergencies they like you to ring them they will ask you a number of questions about your personal details and your symptoms and if its decided you should gi in they will have you a room ready. but if you dont live in the uk things may be different

  3. Congratulations on your pregnancy. If your waters break at any point through your pregnancy you must be seen at the hospital although sometimes it might not mean labor the baby is still prone to catch infections when not surrounded by amniotic fluid. When your contractions start the longer you stay at home the better but when your contractions are coming painfully every 6 minutes and lasting about 30 seconds then it's time to go to hospital. It's good you live so near. You can go into hospital before if you can't handle pain or are worried about anything. Hope i helped x

  4. When your waters break phone the hospital to let them know to expect you. Mine broke with a gush. The midwife will ask you how you are coping and how regular your contractions are.

I went in when my contractions were about 4 minutes apart, to be sent home again because I was only 1 cm.  I went back about 5 hours later, my contractions were still only 3 or 4 minutes apart but I couldn't take the pain.

Its all done to how you feel, and what you think is best.

Try and stay at home as long as you can, but if the pain is unbearable you need to be in the hospital.

  5. when my water broke, i thought alot came out, but when my daughter was born and all the water followed i realised it wasnt all that much!!!

it all depends on the person, every baby's in a different possition and very womans body is different.

being ur first pregnancy, u could be lucky enough to have a short labour or like me, a long one(23 hours) time ur how long ur contractions go for and the time in between. if unsure call up the maternity ward, they're always help u and tell u if u should go in or not.

    good luck!!!

  6. When your water breaks, it will feel like a small bucket of water being tipped upside down between your legs.

I think, once your contractions are 5 minutes apart, then you can go to the hospital.

    Good luck!

PS...Do you not speak to your mum about this?? Midwife??

  7. lol, nothing like ebing rpepared!

Your waters can gush OR trickle...

Mine never broke naturally- had 3 babies- and once the last time there was sucha  small amount of water and it was about 10 secs before he was born it was unnoticed. but some people think they have merely peed themselves whilst others nearly fall over from the gush of rushing water!! You never know...

If your waters break at home you can stay home for UPTO 5 DAYS!..They would normally want to see you within 24 hours, and monitor you every 24 hours, but you dont have to stay in hospital.

If you are having contractions when they get to 5 mins apart with a first baby they would want you to go and be checked.

Often things dont go as you think though- contractions start & stop and you dont know if they are 2 mins or 5 or 10 mins apart...

it is hard work, good luck & have fun!
