  1. I totally agree with the first 2 opinions. I lived in Quito for 15 years and the overcast is pretty much all year round, off and on, very hard to predict. The rainy and cold season is good if you want to see the mountains with snow, otherwise the dry season, where you can hike, but the snow is pretty unreachable if you want to hike up to the refuge.

We always said that a day in Quito has all 4 seasons. You can use a sweater, sunglasses, shorts, umbrella all in one day!

Allocate lots of time, Ecuador is a gorgeous country to visit and there is sooo much variety, for example Otavalo, 2 hours north of Quito, for indigenous things. Cotacachi, for a leather item selling town, close to Otavalo. There are the beaches, and then the Oriente. Enjoy! I am sure you will want to go back for more!

  2. visit at the end of february when the carnival is around. you can get the cheapest airfare as well as have more to do. especially at the beach. also, airfare from quito to portoviejo is around $50 per person. visit quito for a while, then fly to portoviejo and take a taxi to crucita. WORST time: american summer (june-september), the waters a bit cool and no one goes to the beach. another cool beach: montanita.

  3. I was in Ecuador in March of this year, it was a great time to go!  The weather is always pretty much the same there because it's so close to the equator.  Quito was pretty overcast when we were there, but I think that's kind of always the case.  Ecuador is pretty cheap whenever you go.  I would recommend traveling by bus once you get there as it's a small country and that's a very reasonably priced way to travel.  I would recommend buying your bus tickets the day before you want to travel as they don't hesitate to let people on even when they run out of seats.

We were at the beach in March as well.  It was beautiful!  We were in Montenita, which is a small, but fun beach town with plenty of surfing, lodging, and food to choose from.  If you want a quiet place with air conditioning, I'd recommend staying at Charo's Inn.  I'm pretty sure that's the name.  It's your only option for A/C in town.  It's spendier than the places with mosquito nets and no fans though, but I think it's worth the splurge.  I think it was like $40.   Salinas is close by there which is a bigger town, but not sure about it as we didn't visit.

If you're staying in Quito and want cheap places to stay, I'd recommend La Mariscal.  We stayed at a hotel called Hotel Lafayette.  If you stay there, request a room on the 3rd floor because they have new mattresses.  The owner is really nice and it's a safe hotel.  We felt comfortable leaving our stuff there and if you want to leave big luggage at the hotel while you travel to the beach (which I'd recommend), they'll store it for you there.  We got 2 rooms there, a double and a single for $10, I think.  Hope that helps!  Have fun!

  4. The best time to visit Ecuador is really all year round. The highlands' dry season (the best time for hiking and climbing) is June to August, which coincides with the wettest months in the Oriente. Trekking in the Oriente is best done in the dry season, from late August through February. As for crowds and costs, the high season both on the mainland and in the Galápagos tends to be mid-December through January and June to August, when most of the vacationing foreign visitors arrive.

It is a beautiful  and friendly country so whenever you go and wherever you  visit in Ecuador you should have a great time.
