When is the best time to lay a lawn?

I have an absolutely vast back garden and as you can imagine with working full time, I don't really have as much free time to spend in it as I'd like. After this seasons crop of Potatoes, Carrots, Tomatoes, Lettuce etc etc etc has finished I want to just lay a lawn where I had it all dug out before. When is the best time to lay a lawn, what's the best way of laying one? I think it would be easier for me to do with just having to mown the lawn in future instead of digging it all over, raking it out, weeding it and so on.

Thanks for your help,

Jason

  1. maybe spring

  2. The best months to lay a lawn are April and September. April because their little chance of frosts and it traditionally rains during this month  and September because the heat is going out of sun, thus not drying out the lawn so quickly and because you can expect some rainfall.

For the first month, if you don't get rain on a particular day you must give the lawn a good soaking. If you don't the turves will shrink and large cracks will appear between them. Don't forget to feed the lawn. Good Luck.

  4. Generally speaking it is best to put in a lawn is in the fall. There will usually be warm enough days to allow it to grow but not be so hot as to dry it out quckly, and the nights are cool but not freezing yet. It also depends on what type of grass you are planting as to how well it will grow during that time. If you are planting a cool season grass then it should grow best in temps of 65ºf - 80ºf degrees. Warm season grasses do best at temps between 80ºf -95ºf degrees.

The least expensive way is to plant seeds. You do not get instant gratification like sod, but you will spend much less. Site preperation is one of the most important aspects of planting a new lawn. The ground should be tilled, and nutrients should be applied for the new grass plants. That could be in the form of fertilizer or compost. Exact amounts of any soil amendment can only be determined after a soil sample is tested. A quick search on the interent will help you find a place that can do that for you.

  5. September, its warm and wet

  6. It depends on where you live.  In the south, I believe Fall is better since winters are mild.  In the north, it would be Spring since summers are comparatively mild.
