I want to plant some weeping willows along the river on my property. Is it better to plant them in the the spring or in the fall? Or does it matter? Can they be planted now (Summer)?

  1. The best time to plant any tree is around December and January when the trees are dormant. But that doesn't mean you can't plant now. You'll just have to watch their watering and stress levels. Find a nursery that plants and guarantees your trees for a year. Then it's all on them.

  2. Trees can be planted in the summer however they require more water.  If you plant them in the spring of fall they will need less water.

  3. The best time to plant any tree or shrub is in the spring or fall.  When planting in the fall, do so before the soil gets very cold or frozen.  Depending on what part of the country you live in, that could be anywhere from September through November.  You want the plant to have some time to start establishing itself before it goes dormant for the winter.

Summer planting can be done but you have to be more careful with watering.  The soil should be kept moist but not soggy.

Make sure to always plant trees and shrubs to the same depth they were in the pot.  Do not bury them deeper than they had been previously.

  4. I don't do summer planting, some people do. Fall or spring during the wet season would be a great time especially for the willow because they do better in wet conditions.

Willow trees will do really great along the river, I have one huge willow on my property that is beautiful. It was started by my nephew, in February from a cutting.

Good luck which ever you choose.
