  1. You can't see them from the UK.

    But if a miracle happens and you Do see them, they will look bleak and colorless, try moving a bit due north to se them better. North pole, if you want full glory.

  3. In about three or four years. We are currently close to the 11-year minimum of solar activity, and aurora is extremely rare _everywhere_ on Earth. We will be close to maximum in 2011 and 2012, and we may occasionally get aurorae big enough and bright enough to be visible in the UK. They can occur at any time of year, but are more easily seen in winter because the skies are dark more of the night.
