Hi there, I'm looking to buy a new/gently used kayak and I'm not sure what is the best place to shop at and if there's any particular time I could shop and possibly get one at a sale/clearance price. I don't necesarily need it this summer, just would like to get one in the next year or so.

Thanks a ton!

  2. That’s a very good question; you may find your answer here

Diving in Bali, A must see www.bali-absolute-scuba.com

PADI IDC, IDC BALI, Diving Bali, Dive Bali

  3. If you live in an area with real winter (as in, frozen water) you should buy in the Fall.  Keep in mind, the type of kayak will play into what goes for cheap.  Casual kayakers with lower end boats, are less likely to try and paddle into the colder months.  Entry level kayakers (with say a $500 boat) are less likely to have a $1000 dry suit that allows them to paddle in cold water.  (That'd be like putting a Rolls Royce hood ornament on your moped, y'know?)   Even down here in SoCal, there are more boats (ocean, river, lake, or otherwise) available at cheaper prices in the "Winter" season.  Cold water adds another dimension of danger (hypothermia), so boats are more likely to sit in the garage or be sold.

Where to shop depends on where you are.  There are lots of boats on Craigslist, the local classified ads, and on Ebay.  Your best bet would be to find a paddling store you can spend a day at, and test-paddle a variety of different boats to see what you like.

  4. good places to shop are local dealers that have certification check out your favorite kayak brand websites and see their find a dealer section and search for their favorites or their recommendations most have a super dealers tag or something close to it. Colorado Kayak based out of Buena Vista Colorado has a Kayak Swap/trade on the 5th of August however it is in the store for full selection or coloradokayak.com for some of the deals, Good luck and hope you can get on the river soon!

  5. Greetings. Is you live near Madison, WI, every March there is a canoe and kayak show called Canoecopia (canoecopia.com) and they have demos and pretty good sales. I suggest looking around for similar shows in your area because even if you don't buy one there, you can at least see them in person and sit in them to better decide which one you want. I have an Old Town Otter, which is excellent for beginners. I've had it close to 10 years now and it's still fun to bum around in.

  6. Bummer on the kayak. A canoe would go at a lower price close to the winter months, but those kayak people, they never quit! Die hard doesn't begin to describe them. I've seen them in barely 30 degree temps at Lake Casitas in Calif. and all over Wisconsin just before the lakes freeze up. My guess is to hit the big outdoors stores like Gander Mountain during the winter months. E-bay has great prices but poor quality equipment. My opinion only. I've only saw a few items that i could locate close to home and they looked nothing like the pictures.
