  1. A very hardy perennial can be split in the fall as well.  Early spring is better.  Depends on how harsh your winter is as well.


  2. In the spring when the roots still don't have much growth to support. You also don't want to disturb the soil and roots just before winter sets in.

  3. As mentioned late fall or early spring..the reason is you want to split/do cuttings/or propagate perinials when they are not focusiing on blooming and growing..You want to split/root these when they are dormant on growing leaves or blooming and they can concentrate strickly on growing roots..All thier energy will go into getting a healthy root system first...and not waste it on leaves and blooms, thus making a not deep enough or healthy root system
