When is the best time to study before the SAT or ACT?

Call a local test prep company and schedule a free practice test.  After the test they will give you a score evaluation and you will know exactly what to study without having to fail it once and pay for it.  This service should be free.

Test prep with a company usually consists of 10-20 hours over a few weeks.  Working by yourself for 5 months is a huge waste of time unless you can't afford professional help.

The next ACT is september 13th in some places, or October 25th offered everywhere.

you want to give it a lot of time. strenuous and rigorous studying starts 4 months before, since the ACT and SAT are both tests that encompass a wide range of information. dedicate your weekends, especially, on it. for your one month before your 4 months, do study, but don't make it a priority. you don't want to lose sight of it. and GOOD LUCK :)
